Beef Stroganoff   ( Blog http://jonathancraddock.com/images/M_images/arrow.png Recipes  )

Second recipe on this site! For more, take a look at my Flickr page.

Beef Stroganoff (Serves 2)

Based on Quick Beef Stroganoff from the BBC. Nice easy recipe, except it works better for me if I get the ingredients ready in advance - avoiding any need to multi-task slicing beef with one hand and frying onions with the other, etc! I also added some garlic!

Quick Beef Stroganoff

PART I - Preparation

To prepare seasoning, grind some black peppercorns, some sea salt, paprika and plain flour with a mortar and pestle. Chop up an onion and finely chop a couple of cloves of garlic. We only had large mushrooms, and I sliced them. Months ago (possibly on Hell's Kitchen) I'd seen some tip about holding back one mushroom and chopping it extra-extra fine; the idea being that it brings out more of the mushroomy flavour. I can't offer a qualified opinion, but it seems to work, so I've been doing that for recipes like this, and spag-bol, etc.

Slice a couple of decent sized rump steaks into strips. Rub with seasoning and the garlic.

You also need a tub of soured cream, some white vinegar, pasta (or rice would be good) and a cup of beef stock.

PART II - Cooking

1.) Fry the onion in some olive oil (plus butter) until softened, then add the seasoned steak.

2.) Once the steak is browned, add the mushrooms and give them a couple of minutes.

3.) Add the beef stock and vinegar. Let that simmer gently while you cook the pasta.

4.) A few minutes before the pasta is ready, add the soured cream and mix well. (Don't boil!)

5.) Drain the pasta and return it to the pot. Spoon in some of the sauce and mix it thoroughly. Pour the pasta into bowls.

6.) Serve meat and mushrooms on top, pour over the remaining sauce, sprinkle lightly with paprika.

George W : Payback time!   ( Blog http://jonathancraddock.com/images/M_images/arrow.png Observations  )

Found this, which will literally provide hours of entertainment. George W Bush modelled in ragdoll physics. You can choose to let gravity take its course, or grab him with your mouse and send him hurtling across the sky. If it had sound effects (think Homer falling down the cliff in the "Bart the Daredevil" episode) it would be perfect! If you want to see it full screen, view page source, look for the 4424.swf URL, and enter it directly into your browser address. Ran a bit slow at 1920x1200, but might be worth it!

Ragdoll Physics 2

Look at the glazed facial expression and you can only find this gets funnier with every viewing.

Knocked Door   ( Writing http://jonathancraddock.com/images/M_images/arrow.png Poems  )

It's the simplest of errors - an easy mistake,
But the thought of it now still keeps me awake.
I'd searched the estate and had finally found,
The house of a friend, who owed me five pound.
I pressed on the doorbell and let it ring well,
Was anyone home? I just couldn't tell.

With a shake of my head I rattled the knocker,
Clacketty-Clack, it banged good and proper.
Then I pounded away with a fist on the door,
But still no reply, so this would mean war.
I found an old axe and cut down a tree,
Fashioned a ram and now we will see!

The door lying splintered, the image still vivid,
An angry old lady, speechless and livid.
She was looking determined despite the distress,
And in a calm voice she confirmed her address.
17, Tempest Street? I began to retreat.
I'm sorry to say - right number, wrong street.

Problems with MySQL   ( Blog http://jonathancraddock.com/images/M_images/arrow.png Observations  )

Had a few problems with MySQL on my GoDaddy hosting package earlier today, but I have to say great customer support, fast response with good information. Dialled a UK phone number and was re-routed to the US. Went through a few menu-options, waited about five minutes in a queue and had an answer more or less straight away. GoDaddy is great value, easy install and update of apps like Drupal, Joomla, etc. So much better than any of the UK hosting options I looked at, and you couldn't really ask for a more helpful tech support response. (I also think that's the first time anything's gone wrong in about 18 months.)

Firebug, etc.   ( Blog http://jonathancraddock.com/images/M_images/arrow.png Technology  )

Highly recommend the Firefox addon Firebug. Been using it for a couple of days and wondering how I managed without it. The element inspector is great - just hover over an item on your site and see exactly why it's not doing what you want it to!
